Tips to Help You Avoid Spreading the Flu

A little prevention can go a long way

  • Practice Good Hand Hygiene - Wash your hands regularly with warm water and soap for 20 seconds, or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer to kill any germs that you may be carrying on your hands. Remember: You should not use hand sanitizer to clean your hands after using the restroom, before eating or drinking, or if your hands are soiled—you should wash with soap and water.

  • Cover Your Cough/Sneeze - Coughing/sneezing is one of the easiest ways to spread illness, so if you need to cough or sneeze, the best way to cover your mouth is to cough or sneeze into your shirt sleeve. You should not cough or sneeze into your hands, as it can help the spread of germs. If you do cough or sneeze into your hands, remember to promptly wash them.

  • Stay Home if You Are Sick - If you are feeling ill, staying home is the best way to avoid infecting others. If your symptoms are severe or if you have questions about your illness, seek a consultation with your healthcare provider. Remember: If you are experiencing a medical emergency, for any reason, please call 9-1-1.

  • Get a Flu Shot - Flu vaccinations are quick and relatively painless, and they offer added protection against seasonal influenza.
