Understanding the Medicare Hospice Benefit


The  Medicare Hospice Benefit is unique because it provides all-inclusive coverage for people with a terminal illness. The following is a summary of what is covered under the Medicare Hospice Benefit.

  • Services of a skilled nurse, medical social worker, nursing assistant, clergy and a medical director (doctor) for pain-management consultation, on-call 24 hours a day to answer questions or concerns.
  • Other therapeutic services may be offered to enhance quality of life.
  • Trained hospice volunteers to provide respite to the primary caregiver and to be a friendly visitor to the patient.
  • Prescription medications to treat the symptoms of terminal illness and related conditions.
  • Chaplains are available for spiritual support to the patient or family.
  • Medical equipment, oxygen and other supplies required to manage the symptoms of the terminal illness and related conditions.
  • Short-term crisis care for symptom management at home.
  • Up to one year of bereavement care for surviving family members.
